Amputation and Prosthesis in Buerger¢¥s disease

Abstract
43 cases of amputation for Buerger¢¥s Disease, 12 cases in Severance Hospital from Sep. 1957 to Aug. 1966 and 31 cases in The Amputee Center from Jan. 1964 to Jul. 1966 were studied clinically and statistically.
Studied were: age, sex, duration of illness, the relation between level of palpable pulsation and level of amputation, the relation between level of gangrene and level of amputation, preoperative sympathectomy and postoperative stump condition, the type of prosthesis, the duration from amputation to fitting of prosthesis and the stump condition after discharge.
1) There was no relation between the level of palpable pulsation and the level of amputation.
2) The relation between preoperative sympathectomy and postoperative stump condition was uncertain. 3) 21 of 31 amputees of The Amputee Center (67.7%) could wear prosthesis.
4) The causes of inability to fit prosthesis were: old age, flexion contracture of B.K. stump, poor
circulation of amputation stump, sinus of amputation stump and poor circulation of contralateral lower
extremity.
5) The average duration from amputation to fitting of prosthesis was 36.6 months.
